The Acorn Guesthouse Sunderland is committed to providing adults and children with Autism and their families an understanding, homely and welcoming environment to stay away from home.
The Acorn Guesthouse has been working closely with parents of children with ASD along with professionals in the field to enable us to understand the possible requirements for families staying with us.
First and foremost we want you to feel that we are approachable so you can discuss your individual requirements with us without feeling judged in any way. We understand that each person with ASD is different and we want to make everyone feel welcome and at home.
We have produced a social story which we hope will be useful. You can download it at the bottom of this page.
We can also provide a visual schedule including pictures for you to use, which is also available to download at the bottom of this page.
Should you have any special requests for breakfast, please just ask. We can usually accommodate most requests. We can offer flexible breakfast times so you can use the dining room during the quieter periods or we can provide breakfast in the comfort of your room. With the help of an organisation called Inspire Autism, we have also created a PET card breakfast menu which will allow non-verbal guests to choose their own breakfast using picture cards.
All of our rooms have en-suite bathrooms, a small fridge and a microwave as well as plates, bowls and cutlery. This will give you the added flexibility to keep snacks and fresh food products in your room. We also allow our guests to order takeaway food if you prefer not to venture out to a restaurant.
We understand that night times can be a challenging time for some families so we can provide a spare set of bed sheets in the case of any accidents and we can provide a laundry service to ensure that everyone can relax and enjoy their stay. We will take care of everything.
We have recently completed decorating a small ‘on-site’ sensory room and purchasing sensory items for this room that will be portable so they can be used in the guest bedrooms as well.
We are currently in the process of gathering together details of Autism Friendly places to visit in the area. Once this is complete, we will post it on our website as well as provide hard copies in all of our rooms.
